MATTOON (JG-TC) -- The Sears store in the Cross County Mall will close in late April, according to Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications.
The store will begin its liquidation sale on Feb. 7, a Sears media release stated Tuesday afternoon.
"This store is being closed, because the lease was not renewed," the media release from Riefs stated. "Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model."
The Mattoon store has 43 employees, according to the release. The associates who are eligible will receive severance; however, most of the associates are part-time or hourly, the release stated.
Sears is one of three major anchor stores in the Mattoon mall. The others are Carson's and JCPenney. Additional storefronts in the mall include Maurices, Christopher & Banks, Hallmark, Payless Shoe Source, Bath & Body Works, Radio Shack, GNC and Rue 21.
