MATTOON — Harry Dean Nichols, age 84, of Mattoon passed away at 8:39 p.m. on April 14, 2019 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral Services honoring his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3521 Dewitt Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois 61938 with Dr. John Calio officiating. Burial will follow at Beals Cemetery, Trilla. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, Illinois 61938.
Harry was born on October 29, 1934 in Mattoon the son of Harry Bisco and Leona M. (Morgan) Nichols. He married Carol Ann Davis on March 22, 1970.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Nichols of Mattoon, IL; sons, Larry (Sharon) Nichols of Charleston, IL, Carl (Lori) Nichols of Tuscola, IL and Brian Nichols of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Scott (Emily) Nichols of Oak Lawn, IL, Jeremy Nichols of Charleston, IL, Christina Nichols of Tuscola, IL, Holly (Michael) Pflum of Tuscola, IL and Joshua Nichols of Charleston, IL; great-grandchildren, Addison Nichols, Tyler Nichols and Colette Pflum; and sister, Carolyn Vaultonburg. Harry was preceded in death by his parents.
During his life, Harry worked for Trailmobile, Young Radiator and Meadow Gold. He will be remembered as a very religious man who never met a stranger. Harry was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Faith Baptist Church and Buck Grove Community Church. He was instrumental in bringing the AWANA program to those churches. Harry was an avid reader, enjoyed playing horseshoes and bowling. He loved his St. Louis Cardinals and the Illini. In his younger years, he was a baseball coach to his sons and many others. Harry will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
