Lyla was born on December 5, 1957 in Macon, Mississippi the daughter of Lyle and Ida (VanWinkle) Tippett. She married Tony McGuire in May of 1982.
Survivors include her loving husband, Tony McGuire of Mattoon, IL; son, Matthew McGuire of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Kade and Griffin McGuire; and brother, Steven and wife Cindy Tippit of O'Fallon, IL. Lyla was preceded in death by her parents and infant son, Adam.
Lyla served as Executive Director of CCAR Industries in Charleston. She was a steadfast advocate who worked tirelessly on behalf of program consumers and staff throughout her 38 years with the agency. Lyla had many achievements throughout the years. Most recently, she was chosen as the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce's Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 2016. However, when asked, one of the activities closest to her heart was CCAR's backpack project partnership with the Charleston Rotary Club. As a young professional, she was disturbed to witness children entering foster care with their few belongings packed in trash bags. Always solution-focused, Lyla worked with her fellow Rotarians and CCAR staff to raise funds and gather supplies to fill backpacks full of comfort items for children entering foster care. She felt a great deal of pride that this project has provided almost 1,000 backpacks over the past 13 years. Lyla was an unwavering voice of doing what was right, just and fair, even if that was not the easiest path.
Lyla enjoyed reading and days spent on the lake with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Memorial donations in her honor may be given to CCAR Industries, 1530 Lincoln Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920. Online condolences may be expressed at www.schillingfuneralhome.net or Schilling Funeral Home's Facebook page.
