MATTOON — Sara Lou Gass age 95, of Mattoon passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at home. Funeral services honoring her life will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor J. Michael Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2019 at the funeral home.
Sara was born on March 8, 1924 in Mattoon, Illinois the daughter of Burkam and Charlotte (Paullin) Patterson. After graduating from Mattoon High School, Sara married Gerald Woodrow “Woody” Gass on November 5, 1941. He preceded her in death on April 14, 2007.
Survivors include her son, Tim (Gail) Gass; grandchildren, Kelly (Jerome) Downs, Kevin (Stephen) Gass, Timmie Gass and Brian (Brandy) Gass; son, Bill (Nancy) Gass; grandchildren, Michael (Dina) Gass, Sara (Tim) Smith and Rachel (Brad) Orris; daughter, Becky (Bob) Baker; grandson, Styles (Carly) Baker; daughter, Peggy (Mike) Dow; grandchildren, Kambri (Curt) Hinds, Hannah Dow and Jacob Harris; great-grandchildren, Lacy, Macklyn, Cody, Tyson, Clayton, Lane, Ava, Ellie, Luke, Olivia, Walker, Marissa, Addison, Josie, Taylor, Mia, Ella and Cora; great-great grandchildren, Bailey, Layla, Kai and Vivianne.

Sara was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mary Frances (Cissy) Lyons and Patty Ashworth.
Sara worked at S.S. Kresge's, Frigid Queen, Burger King, cooked at the Mattoon High School, was a homemaker and a hard working farm wife. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, served on the Mattoon Clear Water board, PTA member, made 5000 lap robes, Home Extension, 4-H leader, Election Judge and a member of the Eastern Star.
