MATTOON -- Thelma L. Whetsell, age 94 of Mattoon, IL passed away 6:00 A.M., Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Odd-Fellow Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL.
A funeral service in her honor will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 8, 2019 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938; Reverend Richard Eident will officiate with Reverend Robert Clark assisting. Burial will immediately follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. The visitation will be held the same day from 12:00 P.M. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Thelma was born on February 11, 1924 in Mattoon, IL to the late Dwight C. and Bessie L. (Kost) McKenzie. She married James W. Whetsell on December 30, 1944 in Mattoon, IL; he survives. Other survivors include their four children: Tony D. Whetsell of Taylorville, IL, Kayla L. Grissom and husband Fred of Mattoon, IL, Shawn M. Whetsell and wife Sandy of Sullivan, IL, Matt L. Whetsell and wife Jamie of Silver City, NM; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Thelma was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Mattoon, IL. She was devoted to her faith and served as a Deaconess, active member of Christian Women's Fellowship, Women Christian Temperance Union, and HIS Sunday School Class. Thelma was a tireless and selfless volunteer within many community events, activities, and organizations such as American Red Cross Blood Donor, Mattoon Community Food Center, and Peace Meal. She was extremely talented in crafts, crocheting, and excellent seamstress work. Thelma was known for her love of Hershey chocolate and being “the best cook in the world.” She was loved greatly by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.
