At the Coles County Board Office and Rules Committee meeting on March 4th I was shocked and saddened by the people in our community who don't believe in the golden rule.
I was raised a Christian and listened to my father's sermons twice every Sunday. He passed some years ago, but I can still hear his voice and I am pretty sure of what he would have said concerning the request to the board that we either open the invocation up to all religions or we have a moment of silence.
He would have said that the golden rule must be followed. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
He would have explained that if you think you have the right to push your prayer on others in a public forum, then you must also welcome their right to do the same. Giving the same rights that you have to your fellow human beings is the moral thing to do and it is also the American and patriotic choice.
