President Trump was elected by farmers across the heartland, including those in Illinois. He knows that we depend on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to provide a growing market for U.S. crops. Under the RFS, billions of gallons of homegrown ethanol are blended into nearly 100 percent of America’s fuel supply, protecting consumers from higher fuel prices and keeping more energy dollars in America.
The EPA must enforce the RFS as the law requires. The previous EPA administrator fell prey to oil lobbyists, and he tried to shortchange conventional and advanced biofuels targets while granting lucrative waivers to multi-billion dollar oil refiners.
Fortunately, President Trump has nominated a new EPA chief. Illinois lawmakers must demand that the agency stay true to the president’s campaign promises, enforce the RFS, and grow our rural economy. With strong leadership, there’s no reason America can’t remain the world’s top producer and exporter of ethanol.
