In America's long history as a warring nation, no battle has raged longer or claimed more victims than the despicable centuries-long war on the working class. Though not a war in the traditional sense, it is nonetheless a war by definition. The besieged working class now finds itself on the front lines of an undeclared war of legal loopholes, brazen exploitation and sustained attrition. As our bellicose government turns a blind eye to the victimization of America's dwindling workforce, workers' rights are disappearing within the long shadows cast by corrupt corporations. Bureaucratic indifference aside, the most formidable weapon in the government's arsenal involves the systematic proliferation of temporary staffing agencies which now exist in nearly every town. "Temporary staffing" is a blatant misnomer, as "temps" often find themselves working in permanent positions for years while receiving a fraction of their rightful wages and none of the benefits they deserve; adding insult to injury, temps are often forced into unsafe situations, treated as disposable employees, terminated with no explanation and, for all intents and purposes, stripped of their basic rights as a whistleblower under the ever-looming threat of losing their jobs. What began as a solution for filling short-term job vacancies was soon exploited as a legal loophole by greedy corporations who save millions of dollars by avoiding paying for employee benefits, workers' compensation, etc. Indeed, many companies now refuse to hire employees directly, preferring instead to pick and choose "worthy" employees from a disempowered workforce of third-party wage slaves. Whether by design or default, companies promote and perpetuate flagrant inequality in the workplace while laughing all the way to the bank with stolen wages. Putting profits before people is a recipe for certain disaster. The sword of Damocles hangs above their heads; when will it fall?
