MATTOON -- Carlos Ortega was the recent guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Mattoon.

Ortega, a native of Springfield, currently a Peace Corps Fellow at Western Illinois University, is serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer working as an intern for the city of Mattoon for economic and community development and the Mattoon in Motion project.

The Mattoon in Motion project was developed through a collaboration with the MAPPING program at Western Illinois University and the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs. As part of the project, a committee was formed to create an Innovation Center to assist entrepreneurs in starting businesses in Coles County. The committee recently received two grants from the Impact Challenge Program for a total of $325,000.

Ortega discussed the grants and how they will be used to renovate space at the Cross County Mall for the new Innovation Center, and how the Center will benefit the community.
