EIU COACH 2 (12/10/18)

New Eastern Illinois University football head coach Adam Cushing speaks to reporters after a press conference Monday.

Eastern Illinois football coach Adam Cushing’s five-year contract will pay him a base salary of $185,000, according to documents obtained through an open records request. It is a five-year deal that runs through the 2023 season.

Cushing can make more per year through incentives. He will receive $1,000 if the football team GPA is above 2.8 in any year, $2,000 if the team’s multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) is at least 950, $1,500 if EIU finishes a season with at least seven victories over Division I opponents, $3,000 if EIU wins the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season title, $5,000 if he wins FCS coach of the year, $1,000 if EIU makes the FCS Playoff and $10,000 if EIU wins the FCS national championship.

If EIU defeats an FBS opponent, Cushing will earn $2,500. The Panthers play at Indiana on Sept. 7, which will be Cushing’s second game as head coach. EIU has FBS games scheduled for 2020 (Kentucky), 2021 (Mississippi State), 2022 (Northern Illinois) and 2023 (Illinois).

EIU is paying Cushing slightly more than his predecessor, Kim Dameron, who in 2014 signed a five-year deal that paid him a base salary of $170,000. In November, EIU athletic director Tom Michael chose not to renew Dameron’s contract, which expired in December.

The EIU board of trustees officially approved Cushing’s contract last week. EIU hired Cushing on Dec. 9. Prior to his hiring, he worked at Northwestern for 15 years and served as the Wildcats’ offensive line coach from 2009-18.

EIU’s highest-paid assistant coach is defensive coordinator Chris Bowers, who will make $75,000 this year.

Bowers spent the last eight years with Cushing at Northwestern, where he was director of player personnel and head of recruiting.

All 11 assistant coach contracts, as well as strength coach Joe Orozco’s contract, expire on Jan. 31, 2020.
