Each week the Journal Gazette/Times-Courier features some of the top performances of local high school athletes. Here is the list from Feb. 26 to March 3:
Dayton Black, Kysean Green and Nick Oakley, Charleston boys' track, junior, seniors
All three won two events at the Apollo Conference Indoor meet Saturday at Mount Zion. Black won the pole vault clearing 13-7, while Green won the 200-meter dash in 24.61 seconds and Oakley won the 800 in 1:58.05. All three were part of the 4x400 relay that won with a time of 3:46.06.
Mitchell Cornell, Neoga boys' basketball, 6-2 junior
Cornell made 8-of-15 in the Central A&M Class 1A sectional Country Insurance Three-Point Contest. He advances to the state preliminaries Thursday at Peoria's Carver Arena.
Sharifa Hurtault/Megan Garrett, Charleston girls' track, junior/freshman
Hurtault won the 60-meter dash and 200 with times of 8.33 and 28.72 seconds respectively as well as the long jump with a distance of 15-10. Garrett won the 800 and the 1,600 with times of 2:25.68 and 5:28.15 respectively at the Apollo Conference Indoor meet Saturday at Mount Zion.
Cade Landrus, Charleston boys' basketball, 5-10 guard, freshman
Landrus finished second overall in the Country Financial Three-Point Contest in the Class 3A Paris Regional by making 11-of-15. Landrus advances to the Decatur Eisenhower Sectional Friday.
Jaydn Princko/Jaydon Noe, Mattoon boys' basketball, 5-10 guard/6-1 guard, juniors
Both Princko and Noe advanced to the Decatur Eisenhower Sectional Friday in the Country Financial Three-Point Contest by making nine-of-15 in the Mahomet-Seymour Class 3A Regional.
Jae Lynn Riggleman, Casey-Westfield girls' basketball, 5-10 guard/forward, junior
Riggleman finished fourth in the Country Financial Three-Point Queen of the Hill contest by making five of 15. She joins Tri-County's Shayne Smith (2014-15) and Cumberland's Katie Poe (2012-13) as the only other Queen of the Hill contestants from the JG-TC area.
Summerlyn Smith, Mattoon girls' track, junior
Smith was part of the winning 4x800 relay team that finished with a time of 1:52.95 and she also won the 400-meter dash in 1:02.76 Saturday at the Apollo Conference meet in Mount Zion.
Nick Vaughn, Arcola boys' basketball, 6-1 guard/forward, senior
Vaughn advanced to the Country Financial state preliminaries of the three-point contest by making 11-of-15 at the Central A&M Sectional last Friday. Vaughn becomes the fourth from Arcola to make the boys' basketball preliminaries.
Jacob Weder, Mattoon boys' track, sophomore
Weder won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.95 second and was part of the winning 4x200 relay that won with a time of 1:43.02 Saturday at the Apollo Conference Indoor meet at Mount Zion.
