CHARLESTON — The Eastern Illinois men's basketball team's next game comes as a good time. Instead of having a week off in between games - EIU faced San Diego State this past Monday and travel to Marquette this upcoming Monday - the Panthers host Fontbonne University, an NCAA Division III team, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (today) at Lantz Arena.
The Panthers come into Friday's game with a 1-3 record after falling to SDSU on Monday. the Panthers are four games into the season and head coach Jay Spoonhour is looking for one specific thing when EIU hosts Fontbonne.
"I want to see us come out and play together as a team and play with some smarts," Spoonhour said. "We've had a hard time with that lately and I want to see us play a full game and play harder and smarter."
The promotion for Friday's game is Thanksgiving Dollar Daze. General admission tickets are $1 and pepsi and popcorn will also be $1 each.
Fontbonne comes into the game with an 0-2 record. The two teams played last season for the first time and EIU picked up a 101-49 victory over the Griffins.
The Panthers have had an up-and-down season so far. EIU played Nebraska tight but lost 72-68 and then lost at Western Illinois 56-54. The Panthers picked up their first win of the season in a tight contest against IUPUI 80-79 and are coming off a 94-63 loss to San Diego State on Monday.
EIU is shooting only 39.8 percent on the season and opponents are shooting 47.2 percent. EIU also has 63 turnovers on the season compared to 48 assists.
Jajuan Starks leads EIU with 15 points per game and is shooting 53.5 percent from the field, including 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from behind the arc. Starks is also averaging seven rebounds per game. He has scored in double-figures in all four games this season and was 7-of-10 from the field with 17 points against San Diego State. He also had seven rebounds and blocked two shots. He is eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding.
Michael Chavers, who is a Los Angeles native, was close to home on Monday and had his best game of the season against San Diego State. He came off the bench and scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. He added three rebounds and blocked a shot.
Terrell Lewis is averaging 11 points per game and is shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from 3-point range. He has 14 assists on the season. Montell Goodwin is averagin 9.0 points per game and D'Angelo Jackson is averaging 8.8 points per game, but is only 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) from the free throw line.
