BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (EIU) – Two Eastern Illinois men’s basketball players collected conference awards as the Ohio Valley Conference announced its 2018 All-Ohio Valley Conference teams on Tuesday prior to the OVC Tournament tipping off at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., on Wednesday. EIU is to play as the No. 7 seed in this year’s event facing No. 6 seed Tennessee State at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Panthers will be led by senior guard Montell Goodwin who was named a second team All-OVC selection and freshman Mack Smith who was named to the All-OVC Newcomer Team.
Goodwin was the Panthers top scorer this season averaging 14.8 points per game. He ranked fifth in the OVC in 3-pointers made with 69 and will head into the OVC Tournament ranked 10th on EIU’s career list for 3-pointers made. Goodwin had a season high of 26 points earlier this year against Belmont and had six games with 20 or more points. Taking over the primary ball handling duties midway through the year Goodwin averaged 3.3 assists per game with a high of nine in the final week against Murray State.
Smith overcame an early season injury that sidelined him for six games in December. The freshman ended the year averaging 12.0 points per game and was ninth in the OVC in 3-pointers made with 49. Smith twice earned OVC Freshman of the Week honors during the year, the first after he posted a double-double in a home win over UT Martin. He earned the second honor after setting the EIU single game freshman scoring record with 31 points against Tennessee Tech.
