Joe Buck and John Smoltz, at Wrigley Field during the 2016 World Series, will be working together for the National League Championship Series and World Series for Fox networks. The NLCS starts Friday. Buck also is calling NFL Thursday night game during this period for Fox. (Fox photo)

Joe Buck began his marathon scheduled Thursday night, a run in which he will be broadcasting up to 18 games, in two sports, in seven cities over a 22-day span.

The St. Louisan is Fox’s lead baseball and football play-by-play broadcaster, and he’s used to a busy October broadcasting MLB postseason play. His NFL duties usually are curtailed once he is immersed in baseball. But Fox now is in its first season of televising NFL Thursday night games, and he is doing double duty during the run because — barring postponements — he has no MLB contests scheduled on Thursdays.

It’s “going to be crazy, a good crazy,” he has said. “I’m not playing, I’m just broadcasting. I did two games (an NFL contest and baseball playoff game) on the same day in San Francisco in 2012. I think I can do one a day.”

He began the marathon on Thursday, calling the Eagles-Giants football game in East Rutherford, N.J.

Then he’s set to be in Milwaukee, Wisc., on Friday as the National League Championship Series begins. He’s off to Los Angeles when the series shifts there on Monday, and gets a bit of a break because the Thursday night NFL game next week is in somewhat close Glendale, Ariz.

If the NLCS is going, it’s back to Milwaukee next weekend then on to Boston or Houston, where the World Series begins Oct. 23. He’d get a huge break if it’s in Houston, because that’s where the Thursday night NFL game is that week.

Then it’s a return trip to Milwaukee or Los Angles for more World Series games, and on to Boston or Houston if the Series still is going. He has a San Francisco 49ers home game the night after the World Series is scheduled to end if it goes the full seven games.

“Gonna be fun,” he said.
