Eastern Illinois football is playing another directional Illinois school.
The Panthers announced Thursday they will travel to Northern Illinois for a non-conference football game in 2022. The date is set for Sept. 3 and it is scheduled to be the season opener. It will be the 28th meeting between the two schools and the sixth since Northern Illinois jumped to FBS.
EIU plays one FBS road game per season and has FBS opponents set through 2022. Northern Illinois, though, is the lone Group of Five team on the future schedule. EIU plays at Indiana this season and at Kentucky in 2020. The Panthers will also travel to Mississippi State in 2021 and Illinois in 2024, though those have not been announced yet. EIU played at Arkansas last season.

EIU last met Northern Illinois in 2017. The Huskies won that game 38-10 in DeKalb. EIU's last FBS win came against another MAC school, Miami (Ohio) in 2016. The program has six all-time FBS wins.
With the formal announcement of the Northern Illinois game, EIU's 2022 non-conference schedule is now complete. The Panthers host Chattanooga on Sept. 10 in the return game of a home-and-home series that begins this season and will travel to Illinois State for the Mid-America Classic on Sept. 17.
The road game at Chattanooga scheduled for Aug. 29 of this season will be Adam Cushing's first as EIU's head coach.
