The rugby field on Eastern Illinois University's campus that hosted the now shuttered women's rugby team is being razed to make way for a soccer field to be used by the men's and women's soccer teams.

Paul McCann, vice president for business affairs, said the university was gifted funds to repurpose the field for soccer. This includes flattening the field. Rugby fields are typically more domed, EIU spokesman Josh Reinhart said.

The current soccer field runs down hill from the west to the east, which often leads to puddles, McCann said.

The work will be done this year. "Dirt work" has already been completed on the project.
