EIU football made several late additions to its 2019 roster and also suffered a notable loss heading into fall camp.
Former Purdue walk-on wide receiver Ryan James transferred to EIU and practiced with the team Thursday, the first day of fall camp.
James is eligible this season as an FBS to FCS transfer. He has three years to play. He did not record a catch in two seasons at Purdue.
The Panthers’ backfield, though, took a depth hit over the summer, as running back Jamal Scott is no longer with the team. Scott, who came to EIU from Independence C.C., was EIU’s second-leading rusher in 2018 and top returning rusher. He ran for 395 yards on 69 carries and scored three touchdowns.
Elsewhere, EIU officially announced the addition of former Idaho State and College of DuPage linebacker Nikola Wadsworth, who originally committed in May. He played in three games in his lone year at Idaho State and recorded one tackle.
EIU track and field sprinter Payton Powell has joined the team as a wide receiver. The Panthers have three freshmen as last-minute additions: Rock Island (Ill.) kicker Nick Roessler, Chicago Simeon defensive lineman Jayden O’Neal and Belleville (Ill.) West wide receiver Will Shumpert.
