CHARLESTON (EIU) -- Eastern Illinois men's basketball head coach Jay Spoonhour announced the signing of Shareef Smith to a National Letter of Intent as the NCAA early signing period came to close last week.

Smith is entering his second season at Highland Community College in Illinois sitting out last season on a team coached by current EIU assistant coach Tone Boyle. Smith has opened this season averaging 12 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Prior to playing at HCC, Smith played the 2015-16 season at Pensacola State College averaging 9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He scored a season high 34 points against Gulf Coast State College knocking down seven 3-pointers.

Shareef is from Madison, Wis., where he was a fourth-team All-State selection as a senior at Madison Memorial High School. He averaged 15.3 points, four rebounds and four assists per game earning Big Eight Conference Player of the Year honors.

EIU swimming teams earn multiple top finishes

INDIANAPOLIS — In the final day at the midseason House of Champions meet, the Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming teams earned a combined six top 25 finishes.

Lauren Oostman was the top swimmer for the Panthers on the night as she finished in the top five finishing 5th in the 200-backstroke touching the wall at 2:02.63.

 The Panther swimming teams once again earned top 25 finishes in the 400-freestyle relay. The quartet of Oostman, Sarah Lohman, Danielle DiMatteo, and Martee Grainger placed 15th with their time of 3:37.11. The men followed suit with the team of Matt Jacobs, Nick Harkins, Scott House, and Brandon Robbins placing 15th with their time of 3:10.46. The quartet of Ethan Wallace, Bryan McPherson, Ben Pitlock, and Race Archibald finished 23rd touching the wall at 3:17.72.

Rachel Manderschied and Matt Jacobs earned top 25 finishes for the Panthers in their individual events. Manderschied placed 14th in the 200-breaststroke touching the wall at 2:28.38. Jacobs was a top finisher for the men as he placed 17th in the 200-Breast with his time of 2:05.60.

Following the House of Champions the Panthers will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana where they will compete in the Indiana State Relay Meet on Dec. 2.

Upon the completion of the second day of action at the House of Champions meet, the Eastern Illinois men's and women's swimming teams earned a combined 13 top-25 finishes to start the three-day event.

The quartet of Oostman, Manderscheid, DiMatteo, and Grainger kicked off the night with their 14th-place finish in the 200-free relay (1:49.13). Finishing in the top 25 also for the women was Emily Stroud, Caro Lamarque, Renae Johnson, and Julia Martin who placed 23rd with their time of 1:53.80. Finishing in the top 25 for the 200 free relay for the men was Steve Fishman, Matt Jacobs, Ivan Escott and Scott House, who placed 17th touching the wall at 1:35.69.

The Panthers had a couple of top individual swimmers on the second day of the House of Champions. Oostman was the top finisher for the women on the night, as she placed 11th in the 100 backstroke with her time of 57.89. DiMatteo placed 12th touching the wall at 57.28 in the 100 butterfly.

Jacobs was the top finisher for the men on the night, finishing 10th and touching the wall at 56.38 in the 100 breaststroke. 

Fishman, House, Nick Harkins and Escott placed 12th for the men in the 800 freestyle relay with their time of 6:57.87.
