EIU volleyball sweeps Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Eastern Illinois University picked up its second Ohio Valley Conference win of the season Friday defeating Jacksonville State in three sets: 25-20, 25-21 and 26-24.

Anne Hughes scooped up 21 digs for the Panthers and Bailey Chandler got 21 assists. Mattoon graduate Taylor Smith had 14 aces and two blocks. Kylie Michael got three block assists and two aces. Laurel Bailey led the team slamming nine kills.

EIU improves to 7-15 overall, 2-5 in the conference, and plays OVC foe Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

Cross country solid at Bradley Pink Classic

PEORIA — Eastern Illinois men's cross country finished seventh among a 33-team field on Friday at the Bradley Pink Classic while the Panther women placed 24th among 39 schools running at the Newman Golf Course.

In a field that included several regionally ranked teams from the Midwest and Great Lakes Region, the Panthers held their own entering with their own No. 15 ranking in the Midwest Region.

Dustin Hatfield was the top EIU men's finisher during the 8K race with a time of 25:00.2. Marcus Skinner was just behind in 24th place with a time of 25:11.4. Freshman Nick Oakley was third for the Panthers finishing 65th with a time of 25:43.2. Jaime Marcos and Tyler Lay were the final two scored EIU runners in the top five. Marcos was 74th with a time of 25:47.4. Lay was 91st with a time of 26:00.0

On the women's side, EIU was 24th as a team. Grace Rowan was the top EIU runner in the 6K race with a time of 22:00.2 which placed her 79th in the race. Shelby Siltman was 129th with a time of 22:28.3 followed by Avani Flanagan in 145th with a time of 22:34.4. Kate Bushue and freshman Megan Adams were the final two EIU scored runners. Bushue was 155th with a time of 22:43.4. Adams was 162nd with a time of 22:47.8.

Robby Prescott and Will Bullock finished as the sixth and seventh runners for the Panther men. Prescott was 95th with a time of 26:02.6. Bullock was 122nd with a time of 26:14.2. Maggie McPherson and Abby Fisher were the sixth and seventh runners for the EIU women. McPherson was 170th with a time of 22:53.0. Fisher was 226th with a time of 23:28.7.

Freshman Andrew Pilat finished the men’s open in 26:09.1 while Ashley Gilmore got a 25:18.9 in the women’s open. The first place time for the men’s open was 25:25.5 by Colin Herrmann of Grand Valley State and for the women’s race Missouri State’s Madeline Saville had a 23:39.1.

Eastern Illinois is to participate in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship hosted by Southeast Missouri on Oct. 27.
