CHARLESTON — Adam Cushing is to be announced as the 25th head football coach and sixth in the NCAA Division I history of the program at Eastern Illinois University Monday.
Cushing has spent the past 15 years on the staff at Northwestern University, 13 under head coach Pat Fitzgerald. The Wildcats are 8-5 this season, winning the Big Ten West Division with an 8-1 record and earning a trip to the Big Ten Conference Championship Game and the upcoming Holiday Bowl. Cushing currently serves as the offensive line coach, a position group he has coached since the 2009 season. During his time at Northwestern, Cushing has also served as the program’s recruiting coordinator while coaching the Tight Ends and Superbacks position groups.
A Chicago native, Cushing attended Chicago Mt. Carmel High School and played collegiately at the University of Chicago, graduating in 2002.
Cushing is to replace Kim Dameron, who was 27-30 in five seasons, including a trip to the 2015 Football Championship Series playoffs.
EIU track earns 11 first-place finishes
CHARLESTON — The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track and field teams began their 2018-19 season on Friday night with the annual EIU Early Bird Meet in the Lantz Fieldhouse. The Panthers earned a combined 11 first-place finishes on the afternoon.
Senior thrower Jasmine Woodley moved up in the record books for the weight throw. Woodley earned first-place honors with her distance of 56-04 3/4 and moved into sixth all-time.
The men finished with six first-place finishes on the afternoon. Nick Phillips earned a first-place finish in the weight throw with his distance of 56-00. Matt Caines took first in the triple jump at 44-01 1/2. Steven Rowe earned first place honors in the high jump at 6-08 1/4.
Cedric Johnson kicked off the track events with a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles crossing the line at 8.36. Tadiwa Mhonde earned first place honors in the 60-meter dash at 6.92. The quartet of Brandan Lane, Michael Miller, Mhonde and Riley Baker took first in the 4x400-relay with their time of 3:32.29.
The Panther women finished the afternoon with five first-place finishes. Kristen Dowell crossed the line first at 8.99 in the 60-meter hurdles. Rylei Jackson took first in the 60-meter dash at 7.83. Amani Jackson-Gladney crossed the line first at 2:33.10 in the 800-meter run. The quartet of Morgan Atchison, Sophia Keith, Kristen Dowell and Jackson-Gladney crossed the line first at 4:07.61.
The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track and field units will return to action following the new year as the Panthers will travel for the Illinois Intercollegiate on Jan. 12.
