BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – In a preseason vote of head cross country coaches in the Ohio Valley Conference the Eastern Kentucky men's and women's teams were picked as the favorites for the 2017 season.
Eastern Illinois was picked in the upper half of both preseason polls as both teams will have to replace senior heavy classes. The women will be led by senior Maria Baldwin and were selected to finish in fourth. The EIU men will have a host of newcomers this season and were selected in fifth place. EIU cross country opens the season next Friday, Sept. 1 hosting the Walt Crawford Open.
Last season the EKU men's team claimed its 25th OVC championship and 11th in a row while the EKU women's program took home its 30th all-time title at the event held in Nashville, Tennessee.
On the men's side Eastern Kentucky (120 points, 10 first-place votes) was followed by Belmont (106, 1 first-place vote), Tennessee Tech (102, 1 first-place vote), Morehead State (91), Eastern Illinois (79), UT Martin (75), Southeast Missouri (52), Murray State (46), SIUE (42), Austin Peay (40), Jacksonville State (27) and Tennessee State (12).
On the women's side Eastern Kentucky (121 points, 11 first-place votes) was followed by Southeast Missouri (103, 1 first-place vote), Belmont (99), Eastern Illinois (84), UT Martin (79), Murray State (74), Tennessee Tech (66), SIUE (55), Morehead State (45), Austin Peay (31), Jacksonville State (24) and Tennessee State (11).
The 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championships will be held Saturday, October 28 in Charleston, Illinois. It marks the first time the championship has been there since 2005. The first regular season meets of the 2017 season occur on September 1-2.

EIU's Govern named postseason All-Star
DANVILLE — Eastern Illinois baseball player Jimmy Govern was named a postseason All-Star based on his play for the Danville Dans this summer. He was one of four Dans to receive the honor.
The second baseman led the Dans with 25 stolen bases, which was the second-most in the league. He helped the Dans break the Prospect league record with a 163 steals as a team. The junior infielder was named to the All-Star game as a second baseman. He tied for the team-high in batting average with the Dans at .335.
