EIU COACH 1 (12/10/18)

New Eastern Illinois University football head coach Adam Cushing speaks at press conference Dec. 10. Cushing is the 25th head football coach and sixth in the NCAA Division I history of the program at Eastern Illinois University.

Eastern Illinois football’s splashy signing day didn’t mark the end of its 2019 class.

Three more players signed letters of intent to join the program, the team announced Friday. They are all from in-state, continuing the trend of Adam Cushing’s emphasis on recruiting Illinois. Oak Park-River Forest (Ill.) wide receiver Trevon Brown, Chicago St. Patrick tight end Anthony Manaves, and Lemont (Ill.) tight end Nick Stricker will join the team for training camp in August.

Manaves and Stricker announced their commitments on social media in late January. Brown revealed his on Feb. 20.

Stricker and Manaves will play “superback” — EIU’s name for its tight ends that Cushing took with him from his days as Northwestern’s offensive line coach. Manaves played offensive line and tight end in high school, while Stricker mainly stayed on the offensive line.

EIU signed 23 players on National Signing Day on Feb. 6, bringing its 2019 class to 26 members when including three early period signees. Eighteen of them are from Illinois. EIU’s staff had about a month to assemble its class when Cushing and his assistants reported for their first official day on Jan. 2. The class’ highest-ranked player, Dominic Moore, committed on signing day and picked the Panthers over a couple of FBS offers, including Illinois.
