Cape Girardeau, Mo. (EIU) — Southeast Missouri State tallied 16 hits Sunday in the Ohio Valley Conference series baseball finale. The SEMO offense scored 13 runs to defeat EIU 13-1. Saturday SEMO beat the Panthers 3-1.
With the loss, EIU drops to 10-19 (2-10 OVC).
Spenser Dexter got the start on the mound for the Panthers Sunday and suffered the loss. Dexter tossed 4.2 innings, with six hits, four runs, and three walks.
EIU trailed just 2-0 after four innings before SEMO scored three in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh to lead 12-0.
EIU scored its only run of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by pinch-hitter Justin Smith, scoring Alex Stevenson, who led off the inning with a walk.
Jimmy Govern went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Knernschield finished the afternoon 2-for-3.
In Saturday's game, Stevenson suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers. Stevenson tossed seven innings with five hits, three runs, one walk, and 11 strikeouts. Stevenson dropped to 1-5 on the season.
Southeast Missouri got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. They added two more in the fourth.
The Panthers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Matt Albert would blast his fourth home run of the season.
Jimmy Huber finished the afternoon 2-for-3. Frankie Perrone went 2-for-2 with a double. Albert finished 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a home run.
EIU women's tennis team falls to Austin Peay
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (EIU) — Eastern Illinois women’s tennis wrapped up its final road weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon losing 6-1 at Austin Peay.
The Panthers are 10-12 overall, 4-3 in the OVC. EIU is to play host to Southeast Missouri Friday.
Austin Peay won the doubles point as they picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Panthers did hold a 5-2 advantage at No. 1 doubles when Austin Peay won the point. Stella Cliffe and Grace Summers were playing at No. 1 for EIU when the result was left unfinished.
In singles action, Srishti Slaria scored the lone point for EIU winning at No. 3 singles. She needed three sets to beat Helena Kuppig 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
EIU men's tennis drops OVC finale
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (EIU) — Eastern Illinois men’s tennis battled on Saturday morning in the Panthers final Ohio Valley Conference match of the season but came up just short, losing at Austin Peay 5-2.
EIU is 5-16 overall, 1-5 in the OVC. The Panthers are to wait until next weekend to see if they advance to this year’s OVC Tournament in Nashville. EIU is to play host to Marian (Ind.) University Saturday at 2 p.m. for the Panthers' Senior Day.
The two teams opened doubles play with each school winning one match. EIU won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles with Grant Reiman and Logan Charbonneau winning the match.
Freddie O’Brien would give EIU its first point of the match winning at No. 1 singles over Almantas Ozelis. O’Brien posted a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win. Jared Woodson won the other point for EIU playing at No. 6 singles. He posted a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 win over Chad Woodham.
