EIU's Ryan Pearce named OVC male Field Athlete of the Week
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (EIU) — Eastern Illinois track and field athlete Ryan Pearce was named the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at this past weekend’s EIU Big Blue Classic.
Pearce competed in three events, posting one first-place finish and a pair of career top ten marks. The graduate transfer won the discus with a throw of 168 feet, 9 inches, which ranks ninth on the EIU career list. He currently ranks 52nd in the NCAA West Region and has the best mark in the OVC this season in the discus.
He was second in both the shot put and javelin. He had a mark of 55-7 in the shot put which also landed at ninth on the EIU career list. He is currently ranked 45th in the NCAA West Region in that event and has the second-best performance in the OVC this season. He rounded out the weekend with a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 164-2. He is currently ranked fourth in the OVC in that event.
EIU returns to action this weekend at the Indiana State Gibson Invitational.
EIU's Cliffe Wins OVC Women's Tennis Player of the Week
BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (EIU) — Eastern Illinois sophomore Stella Cliffe was named the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping lead the Panthers to a pair of conference wins last weekend.
Cliffe won both of her matches at No. 1 singles as EIU beat Belmont 5-2 on Friday afternoon and Tennessee State 7-0 on Saturday. Cliffe won both matches in straight sets as she improved to 12-6 overall in singles play this spring and 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position.
In addition, Cliffe teamed with Grace Summers at No. 1 doubles to help the Panthers win the doubles point in both matches. Cliffe and Summers have 11 wins in doubles play this year, including a 5-0 mark in OVC play.
This is the second time this spring that Cliffe has won OVC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.
EIU is now 10-10 on the season, 4-1 in the OVC. The Panthers resume OVC action this weekend at Austin Peay and Murray State.
EIU track changes schedule
CHARLESTON — The Eastern Illinois track and field team switched up its schedule for the weekend. Instead of going to Indiana State for a meet, the Panthers will travel to the Western Kentucky Relays, which start at 9 a.m. on Friday.
