EIU women golfers eighth on first day
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (EIU) —The Eastern Illinois women’s golf team held eighth place at 351 strokes at the end of the first day in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship meet.
Defending champion Murray State, led by Lucila Puente Rodriguez’s par 72 effort, was in first place with 307 points, just one shot ahead of Jacksonville State.
The OVC Championship is being contested for the 25th time, this year at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
The course is a par 72 with yardage running 6,043 yards for the women's teams. The teams played in cold and windy conditions on Monday, with temperatures in the 40's and wind gusts up to 25 mph.
Leading the Panthers was Anne Bahr who carded an 83 in a tie for 28th place.
Eastern’s Daphne Chang was tied for 34th with an 85 and Hanna Magda shot an 89 for 38th place. McKenzie O’Brien was tied for 41st with a 94 and Katlyn Haspree held 45th place with a score of 100.
The Championship continues Tuesday.
Chang selected for OVC All-Newcomer Team
MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - Eastern Illinois junior Daphne Chang was chosen for the OVC All-Newcomer Team on Monday.
Eastern Kentucky’s Ragga Kristinsdottir was named the 2017-18 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year for women's golf.
The awards, including the All-OVC and All-Newcomer squads, were announced at a banquet following the first day of play at the 2018 OVC Championship. The OVC Player of the Year award is to be announced Wednesday afternoon following the final round of play at the Championship.
