CHARLESTON (EIU) -- Jessica Wireman led Eastern Illinois from the mound Thursday afternoon with eight strikeouts as the Panthers beat Indiana State 2-0 in their 2018 home opener. This marks the eighth consecutive win for the Panthers.
EIU improves to 25-8 overall while Indiana State falls to 16-15.
Morgan LaMore was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Panthers both of which were doubles. She doubled to right field in the bottom of the second inning to score Megan Burton for the Panthers first run of the game. EIU led 1-0 through the top of the fifth, when LaMore doubled again to right center getting on base for the Panthers. Kayla Bear singled up the middle with two outs scoring LaMore.
The Panthers held tight on defense led by Wireman on the mound and escaped with a 2-0 shutout win over the Sycamores. Wireman improved to 12-4 on the mound this season.
Mia Davis and Burton each had a hit for EIU. Bear recorded the only stolen base of the game.
The Panthers home OVC matchups vs. Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky have been postponed this weekend due to incoming weather. EIU will return to action with a doubleheader vs. Southeast Missouri on Wednesday April 11 starting at 3 pm.
