Cumberland wins, Jackley earns win 700
TOLEDO -- Cumberland's Brennyn Cutts, a sophomore, had 17 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs as the Pirates beat Villa Grove/Heritage 7-3 Friday in a Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division game.
The win was also Cumberland coach Mark Jackley's 700th of his career. Jackley is 700-276-4 and is in his 30th season. He coached at Mattoon for 29 years. He moves into 18th place all-time in number of victories in Illnois High School Association history.
Cutts was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run and two RBIs, while Justin Brown was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ross Hemmen was 3-for-4 with a double.
Cumberland, 21-3, won the LOVC SE Division title and plays at Heyworth Saturday at 11 a.m. in non-conference games.
Okaw Valley defeats A-L-A-H
BETHANY—Okaw Valley defeated A-L-A-H 5-0 in a Little Okaw Valley Conference Northwest Division game.
Eli Hagerman had 2 RBI’s for Okaw Valley, Sam Hagerman had 2 runs.
Camden Coleman pitched 5.1 innings for Okaw Valley, giving up 7 hits, and gained 6 strikeouts. Tyson Montgomery finished for Okaw Valley with 1.2 innings pitched, giving up 2 walks.
Ryan Yeakley was the losing pitcher for A-L-A-H with 4.1 innings pitched, giving up 2 hits, 4 runs, 4 earned runs, 6 walks, 5 strikeouts. Brady Borntreger closed the game with 1.2 innings pitched, giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 1 strikeout.
A-L-A-H and Okaw Valley begin their regionals on Monday.
AOC defeats Calumet Christian
KANKAKEE—Arthur Okaw Christian defeated Calumet Christian 5-4.
AOC had less hits than Calumet, but still ended up on top in runs.
Jack Mudd had 3 hits and 3 RBIs for AOC.
Ben Jefson was the winning pitcher for AOC pitching 5 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout.
AOC will be continuing to play in the ICC tournament on Saturday at Kankakee at 11:00 a.m.
WSS defeats Neoga
MATTOON—WSS defeated Neoga 8-2 at Grimes Field.
This win put WSS to an overall record of 7-9 for the season.
Neoga’s record drops to a 5-19 for the season.
Hunt qualifies for state in tree events
SAINT JOSEEPH -- Tri-County's Kayleen Hunt, a sophomore qualified for the Class 1A state track meet in three events Friday at the Saint Joseph-Ogden Sectional. She was fourth in the long jump (16-4), tied for second in the high jump (5-0) and second in the triple jump (34-2 3/4).
Casey-Westfield tops Hutsonville/Palestine
HUTSONVILLE -- Casey-Westfield's baseball team assured itself of a wining season with a 10-4 non-conference win over Hutsonville/Palestine Thursday. The game was stopped due to rain after five innings.
The 13-11 Warriors, scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to the win. Ashton Rodgers was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. Alex Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and A.J. Stepina was 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Casey will play host to Martinsville Monday at 4:30 p.m. in the Class 1A Regional quarterfinals.
Martinsville falls to Villa Grove in softball
MARTINSVILLE -- In a Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division game Villa Grove topped Martinsville 9-0.
Sophomroe Makayla Hammond was 2-for-3 for the Lady Bluestreaks, who fell to 8-13.
Martinsville will play Casey-Westfield at Casey on Monday in the Effingham St. Anthony Class 1A Regional Tournament.
Arcola defeats Blue Ridge
ARCOLA—Arcola defeated Blue Ridge 8-4 in a Little Okaw Valley Conference Northwest Division game.
KayLee Hohlbauch was the winning pitcher from Arcola pitching 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, 4 runs, 1 earned run, 2 walks, and gaining 8 strikeouts.
Ariana Warren got 4 hits for Arcola.
KayLee Hohlbauch, Ariana Warren, Hallee Gauna, and Melodee Gobert all had 2 RBI’s for Arcola.
Arcola will be starting their regionals Monday.
