Meet the Rams set for Aug. 17

SHELBYVILLE — The annual Meet the Rams event is set for Friday, Aug. 17 at Shelbyville High School. There will be a tailgate party, sponsored by the Shelbyville High School football parents, beginning at 7 p.m. at the football field. They will be serving sandwiches, chips, baked goods and drinks.

Those in attendance should bring lawn chairs, and donations are appreciated. All profits will be used to pay for the football player's dinner each Friday night throughout the season.

At 6 p.m., there will be a mandatory informational parent meeting and parents can meet the coaches. The meeting is at the high school gym. Any parent with a child participating in a Shelbyville High School fall sport should attend. Handbook topics will be covered along with 8-to-18 registration.

At 6:20 p.m., there will be a Meet the Rams for the cross country, girls tennis, golf and girls swimming teams at the high school gym. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a Meet the volleyball Rams in the high school gym. At 7:15 p.m., there will be a meet the SHS cheerleaders and then the school song will be played out on the football field. At 7:20 p.m., Meet the football Rams will start at the high school football field.

Strasburg Lions slowpitch softball tournament is Sept. 8

STRASBURG — The Strasburg Lions Club will be hosting a slowpitch softball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Strasburg Park. Teams may have up to 15 players and a minimum of eight players. Cost to participate is $200 per team.

The Lions will be serving hamburgers and pork burgers for lunch and ribeye and tenderloin sandwiches for supper. All teams must be signed up and paid by Sept. 1. For questions or to register, contact Lion Mike Antonacci at 217-343-9789.

Mattoon Huddle Trivia Night is Aug. 18

MATTOON — Mattoon Huddle will be hosting a Trivia Night on Aug. 18. at The American Legion in Mattoon. Doors open at 6 p.m. and trivia starts at 7 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. There are eight people per table and 20 tables available.

Paid tables will have reserved seating and receive three free mulligans. To have a table, it must be paid for by Friday, Aug. 10. There are $5 mulligans at the door. Participants should bring their own food for their table to share. Drinks will be available to purchase at the bar.

There will be a raffle which includes St. Louis Cardinals tickets, St. Louis Blues tickets and a Fat Jack carving. There will be a 50/50 drawing and a grand prize of $500. Prizes will also be awarded for the best-decorated tables.

The funds raised goes toward equipment and food for players, coaches, managers and drivers to all away games for varsity, junior varsity and freshman games.

Hitmen tryouts are Aug. 19

MATTOON — The tryouts for the Hitmen youth baseball teams will take place Sunday, Aug. 19.

Tryouts for 7- to 10-year-olds will be at the MJBL Complex at 1 p.m. Tryouts for the 11-year-olds will be at Lawson Park at 3 p.m. Tryouts for 12-year-olds will be at Lawson Park at 1 p.m. Tryouts for 13-year-olds will be at Mattoon Middle School at 1 p.m. Tryouts for 14-year-olds will be at Grimes Field at 1 p.m.

Mattoon High School volleyball social is Saturday

MATTOON — Mattoon High School volleyball's preseason social is open to freshman to senior players and their parents that intend to participate in the upcoming 2018 season. The social will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Mattoon Country Club, which will be catering the event.

The cost is $10 for groups of one to three. For families with more than three, the cost is $5 per head after the first three initial attendees. For more questions, contact Mattoon volleyball coach Dipen Patel.
