Charleston soccer downs Monticello as tourney continues

DECATUR (JG-TC) — Charleston’s girls’ soccer team defeated Monticello 4-0 on the second day of the Decatur St. Teresa Tournament on Tuesday.

Bernie Jackson scored the Lady Trojans’ first goal on a corner kick from Alexis Orlik just eight minutes into the game. Two minutes later Mallie Hanner scored with an assist by Hope Griffin. Griffin scored her own goal three minutes later with an assist by Emily Sweeney. That was the score at the half, 3-0.

One minute into the second half Emily Sweeney scored her own goal, the last of the game on an assist by Maya Caltry.

Lily Harrison got one save as goalie and Dru Howell also got one.

Charleston had nine shots on goal while Monticello got two.

“We played a strong game tonight,” said Charleston coach Josh Garrett. “We possessed the ball well and played well as a team.

“Our plan was to score a goal early and keep the momentum and we did that. Hope Griffin and Emily Sweeney had good production offensively and the whole offense moved the ball very effectively.

“Mallie Hanner got a goal in her first varsity match, which is great. The defense communicated well and played well as a unit. Bernie and Alexis came up from the back to help contribute to the scoring effort as well. Everyone got a chance to see the field at some point which was fun for the team.”

Mattoon shuts out Mount Zion

DECATUR — Mattoon advanced to the semifinals of the Decatur St. Teresa Tournament on Tuesday defeating Apollo Conference foe Mount Zion 5-0.

Kyah Eastin scored the only goal of the first half for the Lady Wave two minutes into the match with an assist by Saige Overton.

Sanders got her own goal at the 40 minute mark with an assist by Nichols who scored her own goal, the game’s final, at 45 minutes with an assist by Overton.

Goal keeper Emma Mitchell got the shutout with two saves.

"Our defense did a good job of winning balls at the midfield line,” said Mattoon coach Ryan Ghere. “Delaney Kimberlin, Alexa Kimberlin, Meah Butler, and Izzy Whitney did a great job protecting the goal and cutting off their passes."

Mattoon is now 2-0 and faces Decatur St. Teresa on Thursday.
