Mattoon soccer has record-breaking night
MATTOON -- Mattoon won a school-record 15th game of the season Tuesday, a 6-2 victory over Olney in the Class 2A regional semifinals, moving their record to 15-6-2. The 15 wins breaks the previous record of 14, which Mattoon reached the two previous seasons.
Kyah Eastin earned a hat trick including the first one of the game at the 23rd minute on a penalty kick. Olney tied the game three minutes later and the score was even at one at the half.
Mattoon beat the Lady Tigers 7-1 one week ago in the final regular season game.
In the second half Berkley Howell scored her first goal of the season on an assist by Peyton Gill in the 47th minute. Four minutes later Faith Niebrugge, a freshman, scored on an assist by Caroline Davis. Olney made it 3-2 game with a goal at the 59th minute.
Two minutes later Eastin gave the Green Wave a 4-2 lead on a penalty kick. Niebrugge added to the lead with an unassisted goal at the 71st minute. With the goal Niebrugge put herself in the record books for the most goals in a season in school history with 34. The previous record was set last year by Jessica Nichols with 33.
"We came out and played a much better second half," said Ghere. "We had a lot more energy than the first half and our offense played well in the second half. We made some adjustments to their defense and found away to give ourselves a chance and the girls did a nice job of finishing those chances. We looked like a totally different team in the second half."
Mattoon is to play in the championship at 6 p.m. Friday.
