Charleston wins Springfield Southeast invite

SPRINGFIELD — The Charleston girls’ swim team turned its season around after it defeated three other Illinois teams in the Quad meet hosted by Springfield Southeast on Tuesday.

The participating area schools were Olympia, Lincoln and Springfield Southeast.

CHS had victories in three individual events and one relay. Jasmine Coe won both the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.70) and 500-yard freestyle (5:42.29). The 200-yard free relay consisting of Coe, Savannah Warner, Amara Griffin, and Abby Woodall also claimed victory as Coe overcame a nearly one-second deficit on the anchor leg to out-touch Southeast by 0.6 seconds, finishing in 2:03.03.

Abby Woodall placed 2nd and 4th in the freestyle events for the Trojans. Gretchen Klepzig added a 3rd in the 100 free, and Amara Griffin and Jasmine Warner swam to 4th and 7th place finishes in the 50.

Despite some early success, the Trojans trailed by 7 points heading into the final two events. Abby Geisler won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.20) with Makayla Beech finishing 5th. Charleston placed 3rd and 4th in the 400-yard free relay to erase the deficit and complete the comeback.

“Today was a great team effort. Everyone contributed with points in their events and we competed well despite being a little tired coming off Saturday’s big meet and Homecoming weekend," Charleston coach Dwight Pentzien said.

The Trojans compete next at Danville on Wednesday, October 18.
