LASALLE — The Charleston boys golf team finished in third place at the Illinois High School Showcase on Friday.
The 16-team event at Seneca Oak Ridge Golf Club is divided between North and South teams. Charleston had the best score for the South team with a 298, which was good for third place overall. Charleston, the defending Class 2A champions, was the top-performing 2A team at the event.
The North won the event 2,515 to 2,530. Hinsdale Central was the first-place team with a 291 and are the defending Class 3A champions. Lincolnshire, which finished in third place in 3A, was second with a 296.
Charleston was led by senior Ben Lanman, who finished in fourth place individual at the tournament. Lanman had a double-eagle on the sixth hole with a two on the par-five hole. He added birdies on the second, fourth and seventh holes as he finished with a 2-under-70.
Normal University High's Brevin Knight won the individual title with a 69.
Robert Rardin had the second best score for Charleston with a 1-over-par 73. He eagled the 15th hole, which was a par five, and also the sixth hole, which was also a par five. He also birdied the fourth, 16th and 17th holes.
Preston Smith had birdies on the second, third, fifth, 11th, 13th and 16th holes to finish with a 75. Blake Wolfe birdied the 13th hole and finished with an 80. Zach Will birdied the second and fourth holes for an 83 and Keegan Gowin birdied the seventh and 11th holes for an 85.
