BELLEVILLE — The Lake Land softball team opened up Great Rivers Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep against Southwestern Illinois College. Lake Land won both games by mercy rule, taking the first game 14-0 and then winning the second game 11-0, both in five innings.
Lake Land improved to 10-9 overall, winning its last three games, and 2-0 in the GRAC.
In the first game, Lake Land scored five runs in the third inning to go up 6-0 and then added eight runs in the fifth inning. Braylyn Burdick pitched the first four innings and struck out eight while giving up only three hits and not walking a batter. Madeline Adams drove in three runs; McKenzie Sullivan was 2-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases; Allie Helton was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI; and Delanie Johnson scored twice.
In the second game, Lake Land broke a scoreless game with a run in the fourth inning and scored 10 more runs in the fifth inning. Holly Marousek pitched the first fourth innings, struck out four batters and gave up only four hits and walked one. Haylee Short was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI; and Helton and Johnson each scored twice.
Lake Land has another GRAC doubleheader at John A. Logan on Tuesday.
