CHAMPAIGN — Shelbyville senior Malcolm Miller and Charleston sophomore Shae Littleford made the 15-member second team Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette teams in boys and girls basketball respectively.
Miller, a 6-4 senior guard, and Littleford, a 5-7 sophomore guards were the JG-TC Players of the Year.
Miller averaged a double-double, scoring 27.4 points and pulling down 11.1 rebounds per game. He is the school's all-time leading scorer. He averaged 3.9 assists, 2.2 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.
He helped the Rams to a 24-5 season, its best since going 34-1 in 1995-96 when they won the Class A (two-class system) title.
The 87th annual Player of the Year was Belleville West's E.J. Liddell.
Cumberland's Zach Wolke was one the special mention 50, while Casey-Westfield's Luke Richards was one of the top 100 honorable mention players.
On the girls' side, Littleford led the Lady Trojans, which set a record for the most wins in boys or girls history going 29-1, with an average of 23.6 points per game. The previous record was set by the 1956-57 boys team that went 27-5. Littleford averaged 3.7 rebounds, a team-high 3.8 assists and a team-leading 3.7 steals per game.
Littleford set the single-season scoring record for Charleston with 707 points, breaking the previous record held by Morgan Sherwood in 2015-16 at 587. She also set the single-season record in steals at 111, breaking the previous mark held by Emily Garrett in 1999 of 110.
Danville Schlarman's Anaya Peoples was the 42nd Player of the Year.
WSS's Megan Schlechte was among the special mention 50, while three from the JG-TC area made the honorable mention 100. The three were Sullivan's Esther Miller along with Tri-County's Harley and Tayler Barry.
Ellis and Lowry News-Gazette All-Area Special mention
CHAMPAIGN — While no JG-TC player made the 34th annual News-Gazette All-Area Boys' Basketball first team or second team, two made the 30-member special mention list. The two were Sullivan senior Caden Ellis and Arthur Okaw Christian senior Ian Lowry.
Ellis averaged 18.3 points per game for the 4-25 Redskins, while Lowry averaged 17.3 for the 22-16 Conquering Riders.
Ten JG-TC area players made the 81-member honorable mention team. They were Arcola's Kaleb Byard and Myles Roberts along with Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammonds' Austin Romine and Arthur Okaw Christian's Evan Oliver and Peyton Trier. Sullivan's Dom Kimberlin and Ian Plank, as well as Tri-County's Mason Hutchinson, Blake Lee and Mitch Pollock, were also honorable mention players.
Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's Ryland Holt was the News-Gazette Player of the Year, while Cissna Park's Kevin Long, who got his start at Bethany, was named the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette Coach of the Year.
Goss first team all-News-Gazette Swimming and diving
CHAMPAIGN — Sullivan's Brodie Goss, a senior, was named to the 10-member News-Gazette First Team All-Area Boys Swimming and Diving team.
No one from the area was on the 10-member second team, but Sullivan's Ryan Schodlatz, a sophomore, was on the 23-member honorable mention team.
Champaign Central's Ryan Wiersema was the boys' swimming athlete of the year, while his coach Dave Young earned the coach of the year honors.
