Mattoon and Charleston are each sending tennis players to the state final.

Charleston’s Rachel Thomas is advancing in singles, and the Mattoon pair of Emily Stortzum and Tess Huene is going in doubles after each placed in the top four at Saturday’s Class 1A sectional in Effingham. Both earned an opening-round bye and won two matches on Friday to reach the semifinals, where they exited.

Thomas lost to Newton’s Jacelyn Street in the semi and then fell to Emily Mossman of St. Anthony in a consolation match. Stortzum and Huene lost to St. Anthony’s doubles team in the semi.

As teams, Mattoon placed fifth and Charleston seventh at the sectional.

Thomas won the Apollo No. 1 singles title earlier this month. Huene and Stortzum won the conference doubles crown.

The state final begins Thursday in Buffalo Grove.
