CARTERVILLE — Four wrestlers from Cumberland and two from Shelbyville are to compete in the Illinois High School Association Class 1A sectional starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday and continuing on Saturday at 9 a.m.

The top four wrestlers advance to the state tournament set for Feb. 14-16 at the University of Illinois State Farm Center in Champaign. 

Cumberland wrestlers include two juniors in Michael Carpenter (160-pound weight class) and Kade Warner (170), along with sophomore Rayce Zike (126) and Iysten Syfert (152), a freshman. 

Shelbyville has a senior in Luke Brown (126) and sophomore Preston Quick ready to compete. 


Brown, 27-11, received a bye and is wrestling the winner of the match between Matthew Hobler of Vandalia (29-14) vs. Jordan Cabellero (26-14) of Robinson. 

Other wrestlers that have a bye to the quarterfinals are Murphysboro's Patrick Campbell (19-20), Belleville Althoff's Isaiah Bernal (32-7) and Zike (27-5) in the 126-pound class.

Quick, 12-3, is to wrestle Belleville Althoff's Matthew Minick (34-8), the No. 6 wrestler in the state according to www.illinoismatmen.com in the 106-pound class, with the winner to take on Amiyah Hart of Anna-Jonesboro (24-16). 


Zike, 27-5, awaits the winner of the Joe Lashuay (29-10) of Oakwood vs. Pinckneyville's Abel Runyon (19-14) in the quarterfinals of the 126-pound class. 

Syfert is 23-10 and is to wrestle Carlinville's Chase Michaelis (28-14) with the winner to face Anna-Jonesboro's Chris Johnson (19-13). 

Carpenter is 21-7 and received a bye in the 160 weight class. He awaits the winner of the Darius Hargrove (14-16) of Sparta vs. Oakwood's Mason Ajster (26-6) who is the No. 1 wrestler in the state. 

Other wrestlers with byes are Carterville's Bailey Hicks (34-8), Bismarck-Henning's Jacob Akins (29-5) and East Alton-Wood River's Kylen Rose (25-4). 

Warner is 22-14 and is to wrestle East Alton-Wood River's Jake Erlson (35-5) with the winner to go against West Frankfort's Connor Eaton (39-3), the top wrestler in the state.
