CHARLESTON (EIU) — Fredbird, the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals, will be at the Eastern Illinois basketball doubleheader when the Panthers host Austin Peay on Saturday, Feb. 10. The women tip off at 1 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 3:15 p.m.

Starting at halftime of the women’s game Fredbird will be available to take pictures with fans of all ages. Tickets for the doubleheader can be purchased at the EIU ticket office, by calling 217-581-2106 or online at

At each game EIU fans will have a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Sunday, May 6 game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. One set will be awarded to ticket holders at each game with an additional set being awarded to an EIU student during the men’s game.

Former EIU coach offers hitting lessons

Former Eastern Illinois University baseball coach Jimmy Schmitz will be offering winter hitting lessons in February. The cost is $100. To register, contact Schmitz at 217-276-1355 or email

The lessons will take place in Charleston and Mattoon. The lessons in Charleston will take place on Feb. 14, 21, 28 and March 7 at the Charleston indoor facility, which is a half-mile east of Charleston off East Harrison Street

The lessons will be held in small groups, six at a time. Grades 1 through 5 will go at 4 p.m. and grades 6 through 8 will go at 5 p.m.

The lessons in Mattoon will take place on Feb. 13, 20, 27 and March 6 at the American Legion indoor facility, which is north on 13th Avenue. Grades 1 through 5 will be at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and grades 6 through 8 will be at 6 p.m.

Charleston Parks and Rec to have doubles dart tourney

CHARLESTON — The Charleston Parks and Recreation Department is to have a doubles dart tournament Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Panther Paw at 1:30 p.m.

The tournament is the best two of three games of cricket with a double-elimination format.

The fee is $20 per team with players paying for their own games. Participants must be at least 21 years old.

There is to be a cash payout for the winners.
