Mattoon ties for second at state

DEKALB — Mattoon Middle School wrestling team tied for second with Chatham Glenwood in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state wrestling tournament at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center Saturday. The Wildcats scored 140 points in the meet won by Homer Glen Homer with 164.5 points. 

The second place finish tied the 2016 team for the best finish in school history. This was the first year of the two-class system and Mattoon's 13th straight state appearance. 

Camren French, Logan Blackburn and Aidan Blackburn won their weight classes at the state wrestling meet Saturday fwhile Kyus Root brought home second place honors. Kobin Batemaan earned third and Leo Meyer was sixth. 

French pinned Derek Ruffin from Bollingbrook Jane Addams, Freeport’s Adam McDanel and Noah Avina from Shorewood Troy in his first three rounds at the 70-pound class and won with a 3:10 fall over Chatham Glenwood’s Drew Davis.

Bateman was in the 85 pound weight class and started with a pin of Lake Forest's Seth Bigby in 2:03. He beat Farnkfort Hickorcy Creek's Jackson Zaeske  with a pin in 2:06 to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals he lost to Mundelein West Oak's Bryce Durlacher, 5-0. In the wrestlebacks he pinned Grayslake's Anthony Alanis in 1:36 and earned third with a 5-0 decision over Dekalb Huntley's Ethan Schutlz. 

Logan Blackburn pinned Tarion Fullilove from Round Lake Magee and Qasem Ali from Rockford Lincoln and got a major decision over Trevor Skoda from Glendale Heights Glenside in the semifinals. He won first place in the 119-pound class by an 8-4 decision over Nick Deloach, Jr., from Cahokia Wirth.

Aidan Blackburn won the 135-pound class with a fall over Round Lake’s Brian O’Connor, a 12-2 major decision against Cary’s Thomas Burton, a pin over Donovan Fulce-Noah from Woodridge Jefferson and the first place match with a 3-2 ultimate tie-breaker decision over Mahomet-Seymour’s Brennan Houser.

In the 145 pound class Meyer lost to McHenry's Ruben Maelgarejo 6-2. He pinned Lake Zurich South's AJ Baldaccini in 1:36 and Jacksonville's Lucas Thies in 3:49 before beating Devoine Parker of Moline John Deere, 3-2. In the semfiinals of the wrestlebbacks he lsot to Melgarjo 6-2 and in the fifth place match fell 4-2 to Lake Zurich North's Nolan Schuetz. 

Kyus Root pinned Charlie Nevinger from Frankfort Hickory Creek and Jacques Marks from Highland Park Northwood and got a 12-0 major decision over Ayden Salley from Barrington Station in the semi-finals. Root took a fall in the championship match to first place winner Jramuel Homan from Cahokia Wirth.

Shelbyville’s Miller and Sanders win third at state

DEKALB — Calvin Miller and Bradley Sanders from Shelbyville Moulton each won third place in the Illinois Class A individual wrestling meet Saturday.

Miller wrestled at the 95-pound weight class and Sanders at 135.

Miller defeated Brady Downd from Rock Falls in the first round and Patrick Tinsley from Prospect Heights MacArthur in the second, but fell to Eli Hinde of Port Bryan Riverdale in the semifinals. Miller then won his wrestleback semifinal over Avery Speck from Glasford Illini Bluffs to advance to the third place match which he won over Mataeo Blessing from Coal City.

Sanders won his first two matches over Brack Cieslak from Braidwood Reed-Custer and Eureka’s Drew Cook, but lost in the semis to Logan Stedman of Tremont. Sanders won his wrestleback semifinal over Jovani Piazza from Darien Eisenhower and won the third place match over Randy Manos from Stillman Valley Meridian.
