MATTOON -- Fans were allowed in the Coles County Speedway for races Friday There were 24 entries over five classes of cars to battle it out for the feature wins.
The A Class has been growing well this year and there were five entries. The heat race finished with Donnie Holleran of Fithian starting second and moving to the top spot for the win. The feature showcased a battle between Eric Braundmeier of Godfrey and Holleran that lasted lap after lap with Braundmeier coming away with the win. The full finish included Cody Swisher of Atwood in third and Bradley Isringhausen of Jerseyville in fourth. It was Braundmeier’s first feature win
The Junior Sprint class had two entries with Eli Holden of Princeton, IN and Collin Shain of Sullivan. Shain pulled double duty by running this class and the Restrictor class. Shain won the heat then started on the pole of the feature and stayed there for the checkered and brought home the feature win.
The Restrictor class featured several drivers who have moved up within the last year or two from quarter midgets to these bigger 600cc restricted cars. The heat race started with a win from Brody Strong of Arthur. The points shook out so that Hunter Walker of Long Creek was set on the pole for the start of the feature and he pulled out the win against Strong. The full finish included double duty driver Shain in third, Aarik Andruskevitch of Riverton in fourth and Clayton Apple of Oakland finishing in fifth.
The Outlaw Non Wing class had seven entries from Illinois. The first heat race ended with a win by Tres Mehler of Oblong, with Kody Kaiser of Coal City, falling to second. The second heat race ended with a win by JB Gilbert of Charleston over Wyatt Walters of Ashmore. The lineup for the feature race put Mehler on the pole with Gilbert starting second and the feature race did not disappoint. By the last 10 laps of the feature, the battle was between Mehler and Walters. Walters worked hard to get to first but wasn’t able to get past Mehler before the checkered dropped leaving Mehler with the win, Walters in second, Kameron Romack of Ashmore in third and Denver Musgrave of Oblong in fourth. Kaiser, Gilbert and Austin Hawkins of Bridgeport, had car issues that did not allow them to finish the feature.
The Outlaw Wing class had 5 entries by feature time with Tres Mehler deciding last minute to pull double duty and throw a wing on his car to run a 2nd class. The heat race started with Mike Frantz of Lovington on the pole but finished with Daryn Stark of Springfield in first. Frantz stepped it up for the feature though. After some early car trouble for Stark, Frantz took the lead and didn’t look back. He accomplished his first feature win Friday night over John Barnard of Riverton. Henry Povelones of Danville finished in third. Mehler and Stark both had car trouble that left them with a DNF for the feature.
