Local winners at the Illinois State Weightlifting championships at the Mattoon YMCA were front row - Robin Reardon, Camille Caskey and Finn O'Neal; and back row - Eli Wilson-Brown, Drew Coffey and Bret Pfeiffer.

MATTOON – Five local lifters won first places and another was second as the the Charleston Parks and Recreation Department Weightlifting Club played host to the recent Illinois State Weightlifting Championships and Mattoon Open Weightlifting Meet at the Mattoon YMCA.

The meet was either the first or second biggest local non-national weightlifting meet in Illinois history with close to 150 entries and 136 actual lifters, local coach Marty Schnorf said.

"An awful lot of work went into this meet, and we were extremely happy with how everything went " Schnorf said. "Lifters came from at least six states, and the quality was very high, too."

Nine-year-old Robin Reardon from the Charleston club, won first in the 13-and- under 35 kilograms class with lifts of 20 kilograms in the snatch and 25 in the clean-and-jerk.

Eli Wilson-Brown, 12, won the 13-and-under 56-kilo class with lifts of 41 kilos in the snatch and 47 in the clean-and-jerk.

Wilson-Brown was also named Best Lifter in the 13-and-under division of the Illinois State Championships.

Camille Caskey, age 15, won first in the Illinois State 16-17 age division 53 kilos class with lifts of 58 kilos snatch and 70 clean-and-jerk. Lifters' ages are based off their age on the last day of the year, so Caskey is considered a 16-year-old even though she is just 15.

Caskey was also named best Lifter in the 16 & 17 division of the Illinois State meet.

Bret Pfeiffer, age 14, also won the Illinois State Championships in the 14-15 age 56 kilos class, with lifts of 72 kilos snatch and 98 clean-and-jerk. Pfeiffer was also named Best Lifter in the 14-15 division of the Illinois State Championships.

Also qualifying for the National Youth Championships in Daytona Beach in June was Finn O'Neal, who finished second in the 56 kilos class in the 13-and-under division of the Illinois State Championships. He made lifts of 24 kilos snatch and 37 kilos clean-and-jerk.

Also, finishing second in the Open Illinois Men's 105-plus kilos class was Drew Coffey, who made lifts of 98 kilos snatch and 130 kilos clean-and-jerk.

Destiny Jefferson, previously of Charleston, finished third in the women's Illinois 58 kilos class with lifts of 54 kilos snatch and 62 clean-and-jerk.

The lifters' next competition is in May in Crown Point, Ind., and then the National Youth Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., in June, and then a local meet in Chicago in July, and a trip later this year to Washington, D.C.

Coach Troy Pfeiffer said that the club was very appreciative of the sponsors of the meet and the many volunteers. He said the club wanted to thank the Mattoon YMCA and Tony Sparks, Blake Fairchild and Wendy Holland, Mediacom and Todd Acker, First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust and Joe Dively, Rural King and Drew Coffey, Charleston Rotary Club, First Neighbor Bank, and the Calvary Baptist Church, plus Michael Kirk, Jenny Sawyer, Michael Houser and Mindy Sanders.
