5K to benefit girl

MATTOON – Kaitlen's Kritter Krawl, a 5K and one-mile fun run, is scheduled for May 4 at Mattoon's Douglas Hart Nature Center.

The event is a fund-raiser for Glen and Mary Luna's daughter Katilen, a second-grader fighting multiple brain tumors.

Early registration deadline is April 22 for the fun run the starts at 1:30 p.m. and 5K starting at 2 p.m. Fee is $25 by April 22 or $30 race day for adults, $15 preregistered or $20 race day for ages 17-and-under and $5 preegistered and $10 race day for pets.

Registration starts at noon.

The cost includes a T-shirt, bandana for each pet, medals water and post-race refreshments.

Non-runners can purchase a T-shirt for $10 to support the cause.

Dove Dash 5K planned

SHELBYVILLE – The Dove Dash 5K fun run/walk is scheduled for Saturday at Shelbyville's General Dacey Trails.

Entry fee is $20 if pre-registered by Friday and $25 on race day. Paid registered runners/walkers by April 25 are to receive a T-shirt.

Fee for ages 10-and-under is free.

Race day registration is 8-8:45 a.m. at trailhead/parking ag the General Dacey Trails by the Aquatic Center with the run to start at 9 a.m.

McElroy to run at Sarah Bush

MATTOON – Former Eastern Illinois and NFL football player Ray McElroy is to serve as emcee and participate at the eighth annual Races For All Paces.

The event is scheduled for May 17 with all races to start and end at the Sarah Bush Lincoln campus.

Ages 17 and under are encouraged to run this 5K with McElroy.

McElroy played corner back for six seasons for the Indianapolis Colts, the Chicago Bears, and the Detroit Lions.

The Run With Ray 5K is $5 and a medal is to be provided for all finishers.

Races for all Paces also includes a half marathon, 10K relay challenge, 10K individual race, 5K fun run/walk, 1 mile fun run/walk, a toddler trot and a diaper dash.

Wave to play at Busch Stadium

MATTOON – Mattoon High School's baseball team's annual exhibition game at St. Louis’ Busch Stadium is set for June 1.

The Green Wave is to play South Central following the Cardinals’ 1:10 p.m. game against the San Francisco giants.

Tickets good for both games at the first base terrace are priced at $30 and include a hot dog and soft drink.

They are available by calling coach Mark Jackley at MHS at 238-7826 or from any Green Wave baseball player.

The Mattoon baseball program is also looking for businesses interested in purchasing outfield advertsisement signs. Call Jackley at 238-7826.

Softball teams needed

MATTOON -- A 12-team tournament to support Mattoon Church League softball is scheduled for May 2-4.

The Central Community Church of Mattoon is the host of the plus 1 home run tourney using ASA rules.

Entry fee is $200 with the first 12 teams to sgn up and pay accepted.

Basketball lessons available

MATTOON – Individual basketball lessons are being offered by Lake Land assistant men's basketball coach Brendan Walker.

Each less is $30 per hour with group rates available.

Lessons cover improving ball handling, moving without the basketball, quickness with the ball, shooting technique, improved shooting with and without the ball and improving your overall offensive game.

Volleyball camp, league planned

STRASBURG – The seventh annual Rivals United volleyball camp is scheduled for June 9-13 at Stewardson-Strasburg High School.

Previously called Trinity Volleyball Camp, this camp on fundamentals and new drills is for girls in grades 2-8 in the 2013-14 school year.

Cost is $30 for grades 2-5 with sessions at 8-9:30 a.m.

For grades 6-8 the cost is $45 for sessions 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Also offered is the third annual intramural league for grades 3-8 this school year.

The league is to play 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on June 17 and 24 and July 1, 8 and 14. Cost is $45 for three days or $55 for five days.

Run for Bagel is July 19

MATTOON – The 27th Run For the Bagel 10K, 5K and one-mile fun run is scheduled for July 19 in conjunction with Mattoon's Bagelfest.

The Mattoon Area Family YMCA is host of the event with registration now open.

All 5K, 10K runners, 5K walkers and timed fun runners are to have Champion/MYLAPS bib timing in their registration packet. Real Time results are from the start mat to finish, and the computerized results are to be provided by Champion 24/7.

Also offered are technical shirts for 5K and 10K participants with those registered by July 1 guaranteed their shirt size.

Event day registration and packet pick up is 6-6:30 a.m. With the 10K to start at 7 a.m., 5K and walk at 7:10, one-mile fun run at 7:15 and awards ceremony at 8:15.

Entry fee is $22 for 5K and 10K runners with a $5 late fee added after July 27.

EIU plans golf outings

CHARLESTON – Dates have been set for the Eastern Illinois Panther Club Golf Outings for the summer and early fall of 2014.

This year the EIU Panther Club is to play host to five golf outings with proceeds from the events going to support EIU student-athletes.

Those scheduled:

  •  The 14th annual Bill Glenn EIU Open at Piper Glen Golf Club on Friday in Springfield. The cost is $100 per person or $375 for a foursome.
  • The 10th annual Chicago-EIU Golf Classic at White Eagle Golf Club on June 16 in Naperville. Cost is $175 per person or $700 for a foursome.
  • A new mid-summer outing July 18 St. Louis' Norman K. Probstein Golf Course at Forest Park. Cost is $125 per person or $500 for a foursome.
  • The Athletic Director's Cup Aug 15 at Mattoon Golf & Country Club. Cost is $80 per person or $320 for a foursome.
  • The Sept. 5 Panther Scholarship Scramble at Charleston Country Club. Cost is $80 per person or $320 for a foursome.

Each golf outing includes lunch, cart, greens fees, on course beverages/snacks, favors and dinner. A dinner only option is also available at each golf outing. To register call 217-581-2310. Online registration for each outing is to be available.

Youth golf program planned

CHARLESTON – Get Hooked on Golf, an instructional program for ages 8-14, is scheduled for June 16-19 at Charleston's Bent Tree Golf Course and the Charleston Driving Range.

Junior golfers are to be introduced to golf shots as well as learn standard etiquette.

The cost of $20 covers daily prizes, range balls and a special clothing/golf item for each participant.

Make a check to Bent Tree Golf Course and register with the pro shop or coaches at least 15 minutes before starting each day.

Sessions are 9-10 a.m. for ages 8-10, 10:15-11:15 a.m. for ages 11-13 and 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for ages 14-18.

Instructors are coaches Stan Adkins, Randy Harpster, Deb Landsaw and Charleston High School varsity golfers.

Players should bring their own clubs but clubs are to be provided to those who do not have access.

Cubs-Cards trip offered

CHARLESTON -- The Charleston Parks and Recreation Department is to have a baseball trip to St. Louis to see the Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals game scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Aug. 31.

Tickets are $58 per person for the all-age event. Those 16-and-under must be accompanied by an adult. The seats are in section 335, row 2,3 and 4.

The bus is to leave the Charleston High School parking lot at 9:45 a.m.
