One of the most frustrating impacts of the global Covid-19 pandemic has been the amount of uncertainty injected into food supply chains all over the world. In Central Illinois, that ongoing uncertainty has translated to a “living, breathing bottleneck of livestock, choking the Midwest's meat industry.”
That line comes from a grand collaborative reporting project published this weekend by The Journal Gazette & Times-Courier, The Herald Review, The Pantagraph, as well as colleagues working newsrooms in Northwest Indiana, Wisconsin, the Quad Cities and more. The final story--reported out by a Voltron-like team of regional LEE reporters--provides an important look into the financial devastation and public health crises developing in some of the Midwest’s crucial food supply lynch pins, as employers everywhere struggle with to bring back operations at full capacity.
