Men’s soccer splits against Western Iowa Tech, South Suburban

Game 1: Western Iowa Tech def. Heartland, 3-2

An intense game that saw 11 total cards against Western Iowa Tech ultimately led to a Heartland defeat last Friday. Center back Jose Martinez and forward Logan Lelm scored the lone goals for Heartland.

After going down by one, Lelm tied the game in the 30^th minute off an assist from right winger Carl-Hans Joseph. Heartland was assessed a red card in the 68^th minute off of a handball in the box, which put the Hawks down a man for the rest of the game and made it extremely hard to generate offense.

Western Iowa Tech took advantage right away, scoring in the 69^th minute and the 77^th minute. Even down a man, Heartland fought hard and cut the deficit to one after Martinez scored in the 88^th minute.

Goalkeeper Nathan Serra was solid in net while the Hawks were down a player. He made five saves on eight shots on goal. Heartland was efficient too, with seven of its eight total shots on goal.

Game 2: Heartland def. South Suburban, 3-0

The Hawks put together a much-needed win against South Suburban, mainly through a suffocating offense. They tallied 19 total shots, with 11 of them on goal.

Midfielder Keegan Anderson kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 22^nd minute off an assist from Lelm. CAM Niek Theunissen scored next in the 31^st minute off an assist from center mid Osiel Bedolla.

The final goal came from center mid Parker Hinds, who scored in the 72^nd minute off an assist from Theunissen.

The men's squad will play its first MWAC game against John Wood CC on Saturday in Quincy, Illinois, at 2 p.m.
