Wheaton, IL – Big Blue men's soccer was handed their first conference loss in Wednesday's battle between Millikin and the Wheaton Thunder at Joe Bean Stadium. Wednesday's game marks the Big Blue's first loss since Sept. 8. Millikin slides to 5-4-1 (1-1 CCIW) while Wheaton moves to 3-6-1 (1-1 CCIW).
The Thunder jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a crosser to Luke Vander Kolk in the middle of the box. Vander Kolk struck again in the 13th minute to increase Wheaton's lead to two. Matthew Hart and Olav Kaldahl teamed up to assist Kyle Grasse, earning his second goal of the year and cutting the deficit to one.
The Big Blue fired five shots on goal throughout the second half but were unable to get any past Wheaton's goalkeeper Luke McGuire. Wheaton increased its lead to 3-1 after a goal by Jack Kerm in the 76th minute. Wheaton would hold on to defeat the Big Blue, 3-1.
"It was a close game tonight, but our early ended up costing us the game," said Head Coach Charlie Ward. "I thought we did a good job of fighting back tonight and look to carry that energy into this weekend."
Men's soccer continues their three-game road trip to start CCIW play with a contest at Carroll University on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on the CCIW Network.
